Your local car dealers typically serve a wider area than just your home town; they also serve surrounding areas and counties to meet the needs of their customers in the region. Customers have the ease of knowing they can drive to a dealer who is close to them, no matter which city they reside or work in. The variety of vehicles offered at the most dealerships is incredible.
Local dealers -- if they want to be successful -- have learned to have a great variety of cars on hand that meet the needs of their typical clientele. New York auto dealers, for example, understand their clients probably spend a lot of time in traffic and have urban needs. On the other hand, a salesman in rural area might be selling to farmers or clients that don't have paved roads everywhere they travel.
An auto dealer also needs to be very reliable and customer service oriented, focusing on what will serve the customer best instead of what will serve the dealership best. The smaller the town, the more important this is as words travels much more quickly in sparsely populated areas.
Caring just a little bit more than the competition to make sure their customers are happy for life can make all the difference; having customer service that is second to none, always remembering to keep the customer in mind with everything they do.
Sales people need to understand what a difficult decision it can be to buy a new car and be sympathetic to their customers' plights; answering all their questions with patience, taking the time to go through as many test drives as are necessary, and having a thorough understanding of each car they sell.
Car lots are typically just large enough to hold the necessary variety of makes and models of cars, but are laid out in such a manner to minimize the amount of walking around required for the customer.
Instead of walking all over the car lot to find the car you want to test drive, similar cars are all parked closely to one another to help you compare them quickly and easily. Sales people are there to help find exactly what a potential customer needs at any time as well becoming your best resource in finding the perfect car.
You may think that selling cars is a perfect business -- in some towns there's a dealer on every corner! But the sheer numbers mean mega competition. Be sure to do everything better than the next guy, follow in the footsteps of successful dealers, and you should make out well.
